RELEASE:
VINCY MAS 2008 LAUNCHES IN SVG
This past Saturday, May 3, St. Vincent and the
Grenadines welcomed Vincy Mas 2008 with an official launch that ran the full
day. In preparation for the festival, which takes place
June 27 to July 8, Vincentians began in the early morning with musical whistle
stop tours that wound through both windward and leeward ends of the island –
through banana patches, coconut groves and trees - and finished in the capital
city of Kingstown.
Following various musical and dance performances,
a rendition of the national anthem, and a blessing by Reverend Jim Candon, the
official launch in Kingstown
opened with a speech by Minister of Culture, Hon. Rene
Baptiste.
Announcing that St. Vincent and the Grenadines’
annual Carnival
had evolved into a full-fledged festival in the last 25 years, she urged that
the continuing of its development was of utmost importance. She
also spoke on the praise that U.S. cable networks CBS and A&E
had bestowed on Vincy Mas, promising to continue strongly marketing the
product.
“Vincy Mas is a national affair, a festival
tourism product. It is a powerful expression of our culture, a strong drawing
card that we market and promote positively for the benefit of St. Vincent and
the Grenadines,” she said.
Entertainment at the
launching included acts like Fyah Man, Akcess, Shaunell McKenzie, Calypso
Monarch Vibrating Scakes, and soca artist Luta – who performed duets with
Tabia and Tortola’s Jalena. Miss SVG contestants also
made an appearance at the launch, adding to the excitement and anticipation
for the official event to come.
